MOOC: Massive Online Open Course, free, accessible online during a limited period of time. Receiving a certificate might be chargeable. MOOCs do not lead to a degree, but they complement degrees.
SPOC: Small Private Open Course, like MOOC, but reserved for about 30 students selected in advance. SOPCs are chargeable.
FOAD: Formation Ouverte à distance, offered by specific institutes, open for everyone, flexible in terms of schedule and teaching methods. Teaching takes place in classrooms and at distance. FOADs can lead to a degree. If the studies lead to a degree, students get a student card and must pay a tuition fee.
Online materials: (videos, exercises, courses, quizzes, guides...), for free, to complement and deepen one's know-how, no certificates.

MOOCs at French Universities
MOOC, "Massive Online Open Course” means teaching taking place online. In French, these courses are coordinated by FUN (France Université Numérique). MOOCs are getting all the more popular and they are being organised worldwide. Participating in these courses is easy and the numbers of participants can be big.
